Thanks to its H.264 Baseline Compression (geek-speak for small file size, high quality video) and large hard drive, it provides excellent capacity (over 10000 hours when using conservative quality settings). This gives you the confidence and peace of mind to leave it recording unattended for weeks without the worry that important footage will be overwritten. It offers blazing 100 frames-per-second (FPS) recording with up to 25 FPS per camera meaning you get true TV quality, not a slideshow seen on most CCTV footage. All of this plus 2 channel audio, something only ever seen on similar systems that cost twice the price!

The menu system is and easy to navigate and the system can be controlled either by the buttons on the front of the unit or the included remote control. In addition the DVR can work just like a PC when used with the included mouse.

This DVR has an integrated 15" display making setup a breeze, saving you desk space as well as saving you cables to trip over. All you have to do is plug in the power cable, your cameras and away you go. A secondary display can also be set-up as a deterrent for shoplifters or extra surveillance point in a retail environment via the secondary "Call Out" output. All connected cameras can have their image adjusted (Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation) to suit their recording environment. In addition, each live feed from each camera can use up to 4X digital zoom to achieve close-ups.

Live feeds as well as previously recorded footage from cameras can all be displayed at once with each camera feed taking up a quarter of the screen or full screen. The system can also cycle through each camera while in full screen mode displaying each one for a number of seconds so no thief goes unnoticed!

This product has advanced networking support which allows the DVR to be accessed across the internet from any computer across the world or mobile/PDA equipped with WAP/3G. Accessing the DVR remotely is simple and intuitive. Simply enter the address of the DVR into your browser as you would a website, install the plug-ins and you are provided with a live feed of the cameras, full control over Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) cams, information on alarms, the ability to play back previous recordings and more just like having the system in front of you. Another great advantage of the networking support this DVR offers is that all recorded footage can be backed up over the internet to a PC (works just like downloading files from any other website).

A comprehensive logging system is used to time and date-stamp all events and recorded footage. This makes searching for video evidence very straight-forward as all events and footage can be filtered by type and camera number. Footage can be backed up directly to a USB Stick, USB Hard Drive or burned directly to a DVD via the use of a USB DVD Drive. Footage can then be converted on a PC with the easy-to-use video converter software provided with the unit into the popular AVI movie format. This allows you to keep important footage for archiving or use it as evidence for any lawbreakers caught in the act.

The system can also be set-up to send an e-mail to a specified list of addresses when certain events happen (e.g. video is lost on one of the cameras or the system detects motion and starts recording).

The recorder can record continuously for weeks, however the unit can also be programmed to record far more intelligently to conserve hard drive space. For example, it can be programmed to record only at certain times on a weekly schedule. This is accomplished with the use of a straight-forward interface with each day in the week having 16 time slots that can be marked as a time that the system should record. The DVR can also be programmed to only record when it detects motion on one of the cameras. This can be tweaked with the use of the "Zoning" feature where the camera's view is split into a grid and each section can then marked as a motion sensitive zone (useful to stop the camera recording unnecessarily e.g.: when a tree blows in the wind or a car drives past). The sensor triggered mode is very versatile as a broad variety of triggers can be used to start a recording. For example, it can be wired into existing systems such as the detectors in a burglar house alarm to only record when it is set-off.

All of the event triggered recording modes can use something called "Pre and Post Record". This is where the DVR continuously records the last few seconds elapsed from each camera like a buffer. When an event is triggered (e.g. video is lost on a camera) the previous few seconds are automatically added to the start of the recording so you can get a good look at who has played havoc with your CCTV cameras or set off an alarm for example. When a recording then ends the next few seconds are also added to the end of the recoding.
