An Introduction to IP Cameras

In this modern world of constant online access and mobile devices, it is becoming a standard requirement for CCTV customers to be able to view their security cameras wherever they are. Unfortunately, most traditional network based CCTV systems rely on separate Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) that provide in depth control, but with a significant price tag. This is where the latest generation of IP Security Cameras come into their own, allowing you to view footage online or over a network without the need for additional Recorders!
Simply put, IP Cameras (short for “Internet Protocol”) are Security cameras that send and receive information through a computer network, as opposed to an analogue video cable. Whereas standard cameras are viewed directly on a TV or Monitor (or fed into a DVR) IP cameras can be connected directly to your internet router. Once connected, they can easily be set up to allow viewing over a network, or from anywhere in the world over the internet. This allows a simple and cost effective way to view your security footage wherever you are! Most cameras use a simple browser based application for viewing footage, with many providing in depth camera controls using the same interface. Our new Pan Tilt Wireless IP Cameras, for example, allow you to use the app to remotely control the movement of the camera’s motorised base!

Another benefit is that many IP cameras are now equipped to work over a Wi-Fi network. This means that, after an initial wired set up process, the camera can be unplugged and used anywhere where the network has signal! Not only does this add much needed flexibility to your Home CCTV System’s installation, but is a great benefit for Covert Hidden Spy Cameras, where trailing network cables can draw unwanted attention. Some IP cameras are even equipped with 2 way communication, allowing audio talkback. This unique feature lets you use a microphone to remotely broadcast audio from the device- potential applications include remote customer service, or even safely confronting intruders on your property from a remote location!
In previous years, the prohibitive cost of IP cameras had seen their use limited to the high end commercial market. Recently though, new technological advances have seen the cost for both the hardware and set up reduce dramatically, with some cameras available for only a small amount more than equivalent analogue equipment. So if you are looking for a cost effective way to keep an eye on your loved ones and property no matter your location, now might just be the perfect time to invest in an IP camera!
