What is the difference between Male and Female adapters?

We sometimes get asked by our customers what the difference is between “male” and “female” plug adapters and connectors, and just why do we use those terms?

Male connectors (also sometimes referred to as “Jacks”) have a protruding pin, and a design that fits inserts into the female.
